Research in the lab focuses on the interaction
of emotion and cognition in the human brain during learning and
decision making. We use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
in conjunction with physiological and behavioral measures to investigate:
1) How the human brain learns about value (rewards and punishments);
2) How the brain uses this information to make decisions and guide
behavior; and 3) How humans control or regulate their emotions to
facilitate learning and decision-making.

Ahmed
Moustafa E-mail:ahmedhalimo@gmail.com
My research interests involve building computational
models of brain function (which links systems-level interactions
of brain areas to behavior) and testing neurological patients with
basal ganglia or hippocampus damage on different behavioral tasks
including working memory, decision making, and reinforcement learning.

E-mail:jessica.roland80@gmail.com
I have a PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience from SUNY-Binghamton.
My thesis and dissertation research involved understanding the cholinergic
and GABAergic septohippocampal interactions in an animal model of
Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. My current postdoctoral fellowship
at UMDNJ is part of a collaborative training grant that involves
working with Dr. Richard Servatius at the New Jersey Veterans Hospital
and Dr. Mark Gluck at Rutgers-Newark. My research interests include
the neurochemical, neuroanatomical and behavioral aspects of anxiety,
PTSD and other related disorders. I am also interested in neurogenesis
and how it relates to pharmacological intervention for psychiatric
disorders.

I am a postdoc in Rochel Gelman's Lab at Rutgers
University (New Brunswick), having completed my Ph.D. with her this
past summer (2009). My research has focused on re-representation
and how visual/verbal framing influences what is considered to be
a countable object. I have has also done research on dyscalculia

GRADUATE STUDENTS:

Amanda
Farris
(Rutgers INS)
E-mail:amandafarris24@gmail.com
I graduated from Central Michigan University in 2005, focusing in
psychology and neuroscience. My undergraduate research used a behavioral
paradigm of Parkinson’s disease in the rat to look at retention
of function in a simple task after 6-OHDA lesion or haloperidol
injection. In search of clinical experience, I spent the following
2 years (2006-2008) on fellowship at NIH, with the Molecular Imaging
Branch, NIMH. The focus of this lab is the development and implementation
of PET tracers to investigate the physiology and pathophysiology
in animal and man. As a PhD student in the Integrative Neuroscience
program, I am interested in the mechanisms underlying the cognitive
deficits of Parkinson’s disease patients on and off medications
including antiparkinsonian medication (LDOPA), anticholinergics
and dopamine agonists. Also, I am interested in looking into the
high comorbidity in Parkinson’s disease with mental illness, such
as depression and anxiety.

E-mail:sipetron_m@yahoo.com,

My name is Mohammad Mustafa Herzallah. I received my M.D. degree
from the school of Medicine at Al-Quds University/Palestine in 2009.
I started working under Dr. Gluck and Dr. Misk in June 2008. My
research is focused on detecting cognitive impairment in patients
with Parkinson's disease and depression using learning tasks based
on computational models of the neuronal circuitry (basal ganglia
and hippocampus). I aspire to learn more about the relationship
between Parkinson's disease and depression through studying the
cognitive function in patients, animal models, and computational
models.

E-mail:

My name is Kohitij Kar. I am currently doing my Master's Thesis
at Dr Gluck's Lab. At the same time I will be starting as a Integrative
Neuroscience PhD Student at Rutgers. So this also works out as a
nice long lab rotation. I am interested in neuro-imaging. In this
regard, I am working with Dr David Eidelberg and Dr Miklos Argyelan
at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, in collaboration
with the Gluck Lab. Prior to this I have been mostly involved in
Computational Modelling. I have programmed the Gluck and Myers Cortico-Hippocampal
model in MATLAB and applied that to the Weather Prediction Task
in an attempt to investigate whether the model's simulations fit
into the fMRI study reports. It has been a very good learning experience
so far in the lab. I am looking forward to a successful career in
Neuroscience and am sure that the Gluck Lab has already played a
big role in it.

Jaydev Mistry
E-mail: jmistry@pegasus.rutgers.edu
I am a third year Honors College student majoring
in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I joined the Gluck Lab in
January of 2009 and began collecting data for a study involving
repeated testing with the same subjects over the course of 5 weeks.
I will soon be conducting a new study to compile data for my Senior
Thesis paper. I am fortunate to be a part of this lab, for I have
learned more about a practical application in neuroscience and psychology.
I hope that this experience will allow me to broaden my skills as
I pursue my future studies in medicine.

majoring in Biology. I have been a part of the Gluck lab since December,
2008, and It has been an honor and a privilege working at the CMBN.
I am currently working under Dr. Myers on the Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) Project to study the role of hippocampal-dependent
contextual processing in PTSD. I will be running behavioral tasks
in healthy controls at Rutgers-Newark in hopes of applying them
to PTSD patients and trauma-exposed controls in the future. I have
gained an invaluable experience through this research internship
and it has prepared me well for my future studies in medicine and
health care.

I am currently a second year Honors College student
who is majoring in Biology with a double minor in Chemistry and
Psychology. I became a part of the lab in Spring 2008 and have been
working under the supervision of Dr. Myers for the genetics and
depression study. For the remainder of the 2008-2009 year, I will
be running the depression study in order to understand whether or
not subclinically depressed patients have an impaired learning ability.
I am very fortunate to be a part of this lab, for I will not only
gain experience, but I will be able to broaden my understandings
in the world of psychology, as I pursue my career in medicine.

neuroscience is a field that blends the best of both worlds. This
internship is going to give me the experience I need as a science
major, and exposure to a field that looks promising for both my
future and for science as a whole.

I am a second year Honors College undergraduate,
and have been working with the Gluck Lab since late spring 2009.
I worked with a very inspiring lab alumni, Priyanka, this summer,
who guided, advised, and taught me all she could about the Genetics
Project. At the crux of this very time consuming, but rewarding
study, we are basically correlating the way people learn with their
genes. Being a Biology major and having done research in molecular
biology in the past, I was so fortunate to have stumbled upon a
project so compatible with my interests. Hopefully, the data we
collect will amount to invaluable advances in our understanding
about Genetics and Learning.
