Admission to this internship program is by application only and is at the discretion of the individual research scientists - space is limited. The program is open to all undergraduates at Rutgers and NJIT. Specific course of skill prerequisites will vary by instructor.

Requirements

Time Commitments -

For 3 units of academic credit, students can expect to work at least 3-4 hours/day of 3-4 days/week for a total of 12-15 hours/week in the lab plus spend another 3 hours each week on reading and writing assignments completing independent research projects.

Student Responsibilities -

1. Attend weekly lab meetings.
2. Set up a weekly reading schedule (1-2 journal articles a week or equivalent).
3. Participate in research and related support activities in the laboratory for 12-15 hours a week.
4. Write a 15-20 page (double spaced) research paper, due the last day of classes (before exams). At the mentor's discretion this can either be a report on the research done, or a scholarly review of relevent research literature. The paper should be a polished effort -- with figures, references, and full citations, following the format of a journal submission.

Faculty Responsibilities -

1. Provide mentoring and guidance and direction throughout the semester. In addition to the faculty mentor, it is recommended that a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow be additionally assigned to provide additional supervision and mentoring.
2. Set up a weekly schedule of readings for the intern. Provide a format for the student to discuss these readings.
3. Discuss and guide the writing of the final paper.  Read and grade the final paper.
4. Write a final report on the student's progress and accomplishments (1/2 page), to be emailed to URI coordinator along with the grade for the final paper (gluck@pavlov.rutgers.edu). For Honors students these reports will be forwarded to the Administrator of the Honor's College.
